Special Guest and Opening Remarks by: Riverside County Chief Assistant District Attorney John Aki

Chief Assistant District Attorney John Aki is second in command of the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. He has been with the District Attorney's Office for 27 years, trying over 100 cases to verdict, including 50 homicides and 10 death penalty cases. John was previously named "Riverside County Prosecutor of the Year" and "National Capital Litigation Trial Lawyer of the Year." He holds a BS in Criminal Justice from Cal State LA and a JD from Southwestern. John was raised on the North Shore of Oahu and spent his youth surfing.

Main Presentation: Managing Life After Death by Natasha L. Rangel

Presentation Summary:

This presentation explains the functions and duties of the Public Administrator, the management of a decedent's estate and disposition arrangements. A brief overview of the Public Administrator's referral process, investigative process and estate management is provided. Topics discussed concerning reporting, remedies and recovery, for handling elder or dependent adult abuse, physical and/or financial cases are also presented. Additionally, testamentary documents such as a Will or Trust will be explained.

Bio:

Natasha Rangel is the Assistant Public Administrator for the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner/Public Administrator. She has 11 years of public service. She received her B.A. degree in Business Administration and Master of Public Administration (MPA) from California Baptist University. She has 21 years industry experience working with the California Probate Code and related laws. Her prior experience consists of 10 years previous experience working as a legal secretary in a private law firm where she managed conservatorships, guardianships, probate (estates), Will and Trust matters as well as a variety of civil matters.  She was employed with the Office of County Counsel in Riverside County, California, for 3.5 years wherein she provided legal support assistance in litigation representation and processing of legal documents to various departments within the County. She is a Curtailing Abuse Related to the Elderly (C.A.R.E.) and Elder Abuse Forensic Center (EAFC) Core Team member for districts 1, 2, 3 and 5 in Riverside County. She is also a member of the Training Committee for Riverside County. She is also an Executive Board Member for the California Association of Public Administrators Public Guardians and Public Conservators (CAPAPGPC) and is an active committee member on various association committees.
